Temporal measures of the initial phase of vocal fold opening across different phonation types

Peter J. Murphy

The present contribution introduces three temporal measures of vocal fold opening – as indicated by the time of decreasing contact of the vocal folds estimated from the electroglottogram signal. The sustained vowel [a:], produced when simulating the phonation types very pressed, pressed, neutral, strained (hyperfunctional) breathy and (hypofunctional) breathy, is analysed. The results indicate discrimination of phonation type along the adduction dimension for each of the measures of vocal fold opening duration.
