Visualization of the vocal fold structure and function is imperative for accurate diagnoses and optimal treatment for persons with voice disorders. With the advent of commercial High-Speed Videoendoscopy (HSV) systems, an increased amount of variation has been appreciated in the diagnostically relevant features of mucosal wave presence, magnitude, and symmetry. This study presents findings from the assessment of mucosal wave from stroboscopy, HSV playback, mucosal wave playback, and mucosal wave kymography playback. The results from this study demonstrate the prevalence of features of ‘atypical’ mucosal wave during modal productions of /i/ by normophonic persons. Utilizing modal and pressed phonations, an increased understanding of the effect of medial compression and increased subglottal pressure on mucosal wave was realized.
