A brief history of pitch analysis

Philippe Martin

Abandoning pitch events annotation based on their perception abilities, phoneticians and phonologists alike were gradually relying on acoustic analysis of speech, deemed to bring reliability and reproducibility to their measure of laryngeal frequency. This paper evokes the different steps implemented, made possible by the progress made in mechanical and electronic devices, operating first in the time domain then later in the frequency domain, starting from the kymograph to the most advanced signal analysis method operated on readily available computers.
