This paper describes the development of a hearing screening method based on low redundant synthesized words. Developed in the early 1980s, the GOH method enables reliable screening of young children’s hearing. A digitally controlled but an-alog OVE IIIc formant synthesizer was used to build monosyllables, each with a controlled spectral shape, using the Speech Synthesis Development System developed in Hungary. The child’s task is to listen to the synthesized word and repeat it immediately. The repetitions and knowledge of the words’ frequency patterns provide an excellent estimation of the child’s hearing capacity. The method was tested under both laboratory and clinical conditions, followed by practical applications. Over the decades, practical implementation has evolved due to technological advancements. The paper provides an overview of this invention, its realization, development and results over the past 40 years.
