Predicting segmental durations for accommodation within a syllable-level timing framework

W. Nick Campbell

This paper describes a two-level model for the prediction of timing in English speech. It details an experiment using stochastic methods to learn segmental duration distribution characteristics for accommodation into a syllable-level timing framework, and shows that while 86% of syllable duration variability can be predicted, there is greater freedom in durational specification at the segmental level.

Keywords: segmental duration syllable-level control, accommodation, elasticity, speaker-individuality.
