Our earlier studies of stress group statistics from text reading in Swedish have been followed up by analyses of readings of texts, faithfully translated into English and French. English and Swedish showed apparent similarities in the increase of foot durations with the number of phonemes or syllables involved and also in terms of compensatory stress adjustments within a sentence and in the trend of a rhythmical continuity of stress pulses across pauses. Foot statistics for French became comparable to that of English and Swedish only when defining stress intervals as ending with a stressed syllable instead of, as in Swedish and English, beginning with a stressed syllable.
